You know, when most people talk about Jonny Fairplay in Fans vs. Jon's best moment in Fans vs Favorites comes in the very first scene, when he is first introduced to the tribe of Fans.
In just about any other Survivor season, you have the makings of a pretty good storyline here. Some people believe he was in a lot of pain because of an incident where Danny Bonaduce assaulted him a couple of weeks before he left for the show, and it was too much for him to handle right then without his prescription painkillers. Some people believe he was just a washed up old has-been that really didn't know how to play Survivor anymore, and was over his head. I doubt we will ever know exactly what happened with him.The greatest villain in Survivor history is gone in one episode. But of course he wouldn't be Jonny Fairplay if he didn't go out with bang. Jeff Probst: Don”t know about that but just in terms of our confidence with bringing back former players versus new players we, you know I feel like one thing I said recently in, you know, Twitter or in a blog or whatever is that I listen to the audience. But it is amazing and it was a great reminder to me how fast you can have new favorites. So I don”t spend as much time making sure that I”m tracking who”s gonna be going home. I was having a good time laughing with them but the observation that I made was, “It is kind of ironic, isn”t it that somebody about to be voted out after 36 of the worst days of your life and they”re all laughing about it. But the reason I take joy in that and find it valuable or valid is it”s another obstacle. So I”m having as much of a good, fun joke as the audience is about, “Oh my God dude.I listen to the audience and the audience has been saying… Like I told Spencer from the beginning he had no chance to win the game. I spend more of my energy observing what”s happening. Yes, it”s annoying to have some idiot standing behind you saying “Tony”s falling out of this. Please shut up.” And I”ll tell you, Dan, I will rehearse challenges, a few times a season I”ll run the challenge during rehearsal and John Kirhoffer, our challenge producer, will play me.It's been a few years since I've talked with Jeff Probst either before a “Survivor” season or before a finale and I'd forgotten that I probably needed to request three or four hours as an interview time.Jeff Probst is in his 28th season of hosting “Survivor” and he still loves talking about the game, talking about his favorite players and the constant surprise that each season brings. I would dare say he had the best one episode presence of any first boot in Survivor history. For what precious little screen time he had, he was actually quite good. I don't care that he was only around for one episode. And I will argue to my deathbed that he is the only truly pure villain in Survivor history (sorry Russell, but you are an anti-hero.) Jonny Fairplay might have been a huge disappointment in Fans vs. Because I have too much respect for what he did eight years ago, and I will always love the guy. In fact I think he had a pretty good storyline for only being around for one episode. It honestly wasn't as lame as most people make it out to be.
